Workplace testing
Post-incident drug and alcohol testing
Onsite tests to use straight after an incident or near miss, as part of your investigation.
After an incident, the question is whether drugs or alcohol played a part at the time. The answer fades fast, so test as soon as it’s safe to.
Test for recent use
- Breathalysers show alcohol in the body now. Test first, before alcohol leaves the breath.
- Saliva tests such as SalivaTracer show recent drug use, measured in hours rather than days (see detection periods), which is what an investigation needs.
- Urine cups look back further. They are useful alongside saliva, but a positive urine result alone doesn’t show use at the time of the incident.
Be ready before you need it
- Keep kits on site, within their storage temperatures and expiry dates.
- Train the people who’ll run the tests; our Resource Centre has instructional videos.
- Send any result that isn’t negative to a laboratory with a confirmation kit, and record the time of the incident and the time of the test.
