Workplace testing
Return-to-work drug and alcohol testing
Onsite tests for checking someone is fit for work before they come back, and for follow-up testing after they return.
Return-to-work testing checks that someone is fit to come back, for example after a non-negative result or time away for treatment. It usually continues with follow-up tests over the following months, as agreed in a return-to-work plan.
Test for what matters to the plan
- Match the panel to the reason. If someone returns after treatment for a particular drug, make sure the test covers it. Standard panels miss fentanyl, oxycodone and other opioids; single-drug dip tests fill the gap.
- For alcohol, a breathalyser shows alcohol now; an EtG test shows drinking in the days before.
- Prescribed medicines can show on a test. Ask people to declare them first.
Keep it consistent
Use the same type of test each time so results compare, agree the testing schedule in writing, and send any result that isn’t negative to a laboratory with a confirmation kit.
